Experiencing the True Love of John Donne’s “A Valediction...

Departing from a lover might often seem painful; yet, it is precisely with the departures that one learns about the nature of true love. In the poem â€Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning,† John Donne offers a beautiful insight into this subject. As he consoles his wife by asserting that their love is everlasting, the poet develops a theme that unifies the poem and allows the reader to identify his intention. The theme, therefore, is especially important as it serves as a central point around which all the other elements are structured. As John Donne explores the nature of unconditional love, he employs metaphors, symbolism, and tone as the three main elements that reinforce the theme and contribute to creating a poem that both moves and†¦show more content†¦Donne elaborates upon this idea in the fourth stanza as he states that the ordinary people’s â€Å"soul is sense† (line 14). By comparing their souls with the senses, Donne describes the imperfecti ons of a love based on physical attraction only. Donne asserts that their love is different because it is transcendental and deeper than sensations. Moreover, in line 23 the poet states that his departure will cause an â€Å"expansion† rather than a separation between them as they will remain as one. The simile in line 24 contributes to this metaphorical consideration as Donne draws comparison between their love and gold. As gold expands when it is beaten, their love will spread and be precious despite their separation; it will never break. By illustrating the eternal nature of their love, this line contributes to the theme of the poem and allows the reader to connect to the claim of true love. Finally, the most significant metaphor in the poem is found in the seventh stanza as Donne compares his love with a compass. In line 27, he suggests that his wife‘s soul is the â€Å"fixed foot† and therefore, as he asserts in line 30, he is the foot who has to â€Å"roam†; he is the one who needs to go. Because both Janie and Mrs.Turner both have white tendencies and characteristics, they are able to relate to each other and create a friendship out of that. Mrs.Turner worships Janie because of her lovely braids and the attraction of men she brings. This benefits Janie’s desires to have even greater power with Tea Cake since Jody Starks dies of liver failure. On the other side of the spectrum, the theme of power and control plays a vital role with Janie’s hair. Jody knew it was too beautiful to be seen out in public so, â€Å"Her hair was NOT going to show in the store. It didn’t seem sensible at all. That was because Joe never told Janie how jealous he was. Not long after his passing, Janie celebrates her liberation and so, â€Å"She went over to the dresser and looked hard at her skin and features. The young girl was gone, but a handsome woman had taken her place. She tore off the Kerchief from her head and let down her plentiful hair. The weight, the length, the glory was there. She took careful stock of herself, then combed her hair and tied it back up again† (Hurston 87). After Joe’s death, Janie was not hesitate to burn the shawls he demanded her to wear. She felt like her true self again, with the presence of her glorious hair. She was able to style it herself the way she wanted it after finding a man who accepted her, Tea Cake. These two symbols, Janie’s hair and her shawl work hand in hand to result in strength and beauty and most importantly, power. Janie’s hair is constantly described as a symbol of power which dims gender lines and threatens Jody. Even though when it’s down and characterizes Janie, those attributes were hidden under the oppression and security of Jody. The shawl made her lose that power which therefore took away her identity. Even when under the control of her husband, Janie’s life played out in a way where her hair gave back her strength and control after the burning of the encapsulating shawls. The independence she held was accepted from her next lover which made her acquire equality and her hair showed beauty from then on.

Washam 1 Is Napster Stealing? The web site Napster has become a very popular site on the Internet this past year. The web site was founded by 19-year-old Shawn Fanning. Fanning thought up the ideal of Napster while a freshman at Northwestern University. In May of 1999, Fanning was looking for digital music files (MP3) on the Internet and became frustrated about how hard it was. Fanning later got financial support from a friend a created the software that makes Napster possible (Hartigan). The Napster web site has been very popular since it started. Over twenty million people have downloaded the program. The Napster web site can be accessed at Napster.com. Once you are there you can download the software onto your computer. When the download completes your computer is connected to everyone else who has downloaded the program. Napster consist of a library, search engine, and a chat room. The library is where you store your MP3 files that you have downloaded. The search engine is where your can search other peoples computers and download files they have. All you have to do is put in a bands name and song title and hit find it on the task bar and instantly one hundred songs appear ready to be downloaded. The chat room allows you to talk to people and find out what kind of songs they have. Napster sounds great for free music but some of the people who make that music are not happy. The Record Industry Association of America (IRAA) filed a lawsuit in the San Francisco federal court saying that Napster users are violating copyright laws (Stone 58). The IRAA lawsuit says Napster is responsible for the copyright violations. The lawsuit also says that copyright music is being shared by Napster users and that violates the Musical Copyright Act of 1902. The IRAA lawsuit is also saying that Napster is violating the Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998. The Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998 allows MP3 files to be linked by search engines but if the link contains copyright music than the engine must remove it (Mann). Napster is also being sued by the Washam 2 rock band Metallica and the rapper Dr. Dre because they say they their music is being illegally pirated on Napster. Lars Ulrich, Metallica's drummer, is the media spokesperson for the RIAA. Ulrich told Ron Harris of the Associated Press that if Napster users are stealing our music just like if they went down to the record store and stole it off the shelf. He has also identified 335, 000 Napster users that are trading Metallica's copyrighted music without their permission. Ulrich is asking Napster to ban these users from the site (Borland). The IRAA also filed suit against two universities saying that they have a responsible to stop illegal activity on their computer systems. As a result of this lawsuit Yale University and Indiana University banned the web site. Many other colleges and universities followed because of fear of being sued (Harris). On Napster's side of the lawsuit they are saying that the entire lawsuit should be dropped because the web site is not directly responsible for the copyright violations. Napster claims that it just provides the software to share the MP3 files and does not provide any files to be downloaded. Napster is also arguing that it is protected from copyright violations under the digital copyright laws. Napster also provides names of twenty-five thousand artist that say it is all right for their songs to be on Napster (Mann). Limp Bizkit and Cypress Hill even went on a free ticket tour, sponsored by Napster, to show their support for Napster. Napster also replied to what Ulrich said in the Associated Press by saying that it would comply with Metallica demands to remove their songs from Napster. I believe that Napster technology is not a form of computer piracy as long as it is used responsible. In my opinion downloading songs off Napster is not piracy as long as you use them for your own personal use. I have almost two hundred songs downloaded from Napster and I do not feel I am breaking the law. I use the songs on my hard drive just to listen too while I am in my dorm room. Would You Follow You Top 10 Ways to Be a LEADER Spurred in part by an exercise I did at an ActionCOACH business planning workday, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it means to be a leader.   My commitment is to be a great one, and I’m getting clear that in order to be successful, there are certain traits that I must possess. Here are my top ten: Deliver clear, consistent communication. Of course there are no guarantees that everyone will understand the communication the way you meant it. At least if you’re clear and consistent, you minimize the possibility of misinterpretation or gaps in the lines of command. Learn from your mistakes and miscommunications. If you keep making the same mistakes, you are not being a leader. You are just being insane. Learning from your mistakes requires a willingness to self-evaluate, and a commitment to the utmost integrity. Be charismatic. What this means is to be present in the moment.   Show up as who you are and not the way you think you should be. Charisma also requires a sense of humor! Be unstoppable. Obstacles and challenges are bound to arise.   If you stop to carefully examine the obstacle you will not get past it.   Keep looking toward your goals, and obstacles will have nothing on you. Have vision. Know why you are doing what you are doing, and have it be about something or someone other than you (or money).   Vision will help you be unstoppable and inspiring. Be inspiring. Ask yourself, â€Å"Would you follow you?† If the answer is no, â€Å"Stop, drop and roll† and get yourself back in alignment.   Get yourself to â€Å"Yes.† Take action! And be the inspiring leader you know you truly are. Support the people around you. The measure of a great leader is the success of the people he or she leads. If the people around you are learning and growing, you’re doing something right. Be willing to change direction. Stubbornly charging toward a particular goal in a particular way is a recipe for disaster.   Flexibility will allow for unexpected expansion and miraculous results. Keep looking for the next way to grow. Be committed. Dabblers and dilettantes will not get very far in leading anyone.   Leaders can be counted on to be 100% in the game and to ride out the ups and downs. Know that it’s a game, and play full-out. Play a BIG game.   That way if you win, you win, and if you lose, you win. Looking at my list, I notice there are places where I’m right on, and others where there is a gap between where I am and where I want to be.   This is good news!   I get to learn and grow and always strive to more fully embody the qualities of a leader. In the everyday struggle of the pilot with the River, in the gratification of the task, in the unbroken focus on the random difficulties, his mind was completely engaged, and he took in wisdom of which, as a novelist, he used soon after. Maybe, there are only two ways where in an author can gain knowledge of the situation which s/he can afterward narrate: one is by spending one’s childhood in that situation, or, in other words, living in it at a time where in one encounters much more than s/he understands; and second, by experiencing the difficulty of making a living in that situation (Champion 1991).
